Total Control

Featuring some of the strongest germs in Melbourne, Australia’s garage punk scene, Total Control formed in 2008 when UV Race drummer Dan Steward and Eddy Current Suppression Ring guitarist/producer Mikey Young came together over a love of wiry '80s punk heros like Devo, Gary Numan, and the Screamers. Both initially busy with their main bands, they experimented with Total Control whenever time allowed, eventually bashing out a punky self-titled debut 7" in 2008. The band's releases came mostly in the form of quickly sold-out 7" singles for the next few years, including Paranoid Video and the cold-wavey Pyre Island. Each concurrent single saw the duo (sometimes aided by external players on these recordings) shifting styles dramatically. Fans and press alike noted Total Control growing more minimal with each gear shift, adopting more electronic elements as their catalog grew. Late 2011 saw the release of Henge Beat, their first full-length endeavor, and an amalgamation of the various cold styles that wove through their previous singles. Steward and Young enlisted the help of accomplices from the Melbourne punk underbelly for both the recording of Henge Beat as well as live shows. At this point the band enjoyed a successful tour of the States opening for San Francisco garage favorites Thee Oh Sees.

Exploding White Mice part I

Exploding White Mice were formed in Adelaide, South Australia in early 1984, for the sole purpose of playing a set of covers at a friend’s party. The first line-up consisted of Gerry Barrett (guitar), Giles Barrow (guitar), Paul Gilchrist (vocals), Andy MacQueen (bass) and Craig Rodda (drums). The band wore its influences proudly on its sleeve, those being: 60’s garage punk (Sonics, 13th Floor Elevators etc.), 70’s American punk rock (Stooges, MC5, New York Dolls, Ramones etc.), and 70’s Australian rock and roll (the Saints & Radio Birdman). After playing a couple of parties, the band (to its surprise) was offerred a show at an inner-city pub, which began a rapid growth in popularity. Shows were characterised by high energy, masses of dyed black hair, brutal volume and relentless posing, all of which went down a storm in the already healthy Adelaide scene. Other bands playing around town at the time included the Spikes, Mad Turks, Screaming Believers, Primevils and the Plague, all of whom would, along with the Mice, soon release records on the Greasy Pop label. In late 1984 Gerry Barrett left the band, to be replaced by guitarist Jeff Stephens, who remained a member until the band’s last gig in May 2000.

The Fumes

Compelling Sydney two-piece, the Fumes burst onto the scene in 2004. The Fumes deliver multi-facetted stylistic raw blues tunes mashed with healthy rock riffs and snappy beats. Steve Merry (vocals, guitar) spent 12 months in the U.S where he took on some mentoring from Bob Brozman and an opportunity to immerse himself with many styles of music. It helped define and develop the Fumes. The Fumes complete with the addition of Joel Battersby, who had been drumming with members of the Beautiful Girls, proceeded to churn out an 8-track demo. The demand for the demo was so strong it was re-packaged as a 7-track pre-release for gig sales.

Feedtime part I

Imagine laying your head on railroad tracks, feeling the vibrations of the oncoming train rattling through your head, and leaving your head on the tracks as the train roars over it, and you're getting close to the sonic assault that is Feedtime. Crude, repetitive, droning, simplistic; these are all qualities that lead to big fun when any one of Feedtime's four records lands on your noggin with a resounding thud. In fact, it would be reasonable to more succinctly describe these guys as Australia's Flipper/Big Black/Melvins (pick one). Amazingly, there is something that passes for nuance in each of their records. Emerging from the tar pit of sound are blues licks (albeit the loudest, most-distorted blues licks you've ever heard), folk, and country touches, and art damage on a par with Flipper and Pere Ubu. Ferociously direct, the music of Feedtime is as relentless as it is dark; there are no happy moments here, and the gurgling, vomited-up vocals add to the black mood. That, however, doesn't mean these guys didn't have a sense of humor: their third record, Cooper-S (the title comes from the name of an Australian manufactured sub-compact car) is loaded with covers (Beach Boys, Stones, Ramones, etc.), wherein Feedtime bludgeons each one to death with tongue-in-cheek. Sadly, and perhaps unsurprisingly, Feedtime's extreme take on rock & roll ground to a halt in 1989. Maybe they simply were too intense for themselves to continue, but in the meantime they unleased a lugubrious fury of sonic distress that few bands have equalled.

Lipstick Killers

One of the most exciting things to hit a stage anywhere in the late '70s and early '80s were an electroshock-jolt Sydney combo called the Lipstick Killers. Rarely seen outside their home town, they were a musical stun gun with short, sharp, super-charged songs about dead movie stars ("Human Crash"), schoolyard bashings ("Bully"), hippy cults ("Hindu Gods of Love") and limbless freak show performers like Prince Randian ("Sockman"). Formed from the ashes of Radio Birdman supports the Psychosurgeons and confrontational punks Filth, the Lipstick Killers had a reputation as Sydney's most energetic and theatrical band when they upped stakes and moved overseas. The best part of a year of no fame and ill-fortune (much of it spent down and out in West Hollywood) wound up when the band called it a day after moving to L.A. to kick-start an overseas career. They left behind a single on Voxx (the ball-tearing "Hindu Gods of Love" b/w "Shakedown USA") but nothing was heard until the Lipstick Killers came back (briefly) in the late '80s. The twin axis of the band's principals, singer Peter Tillman and guitarist Mark Taylor, did a year (with latter day Killer Steven Mather on bass) as the backbone of fearsome 60s punkers Dr Stone in the early '90s, but with that band's demise the book seemed closed, a posthumous album (Mesmerizer on Citadel) and two more singles ("Sockman" b/w "Pensioner Pie" on Vynil and a self-issued live 45) seemingly the postscript.

Scientists discography

New Race

An interesting one-time-only band, New Race was proof that good music can occur when "teachers" and "students" get together. In this instance, the "teachers" were ex-Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton and ex-MC5 drummer Dennis Thompson, who joined forces with "students" Deniz Tek, Rob Younger, and Warwick Gilbert, the latter three members of the seminal Australian punk band Radio Birdman. Tek was a Michigan native who'd emigrated to Australia in the early '70s, bringing his love of high-energy Detroit proto-punk with him. After Birdman's demise, he contacted Asheton and Thompson to come to Australia and form this ad-hoc touring outfit. New Race toured Australia once in 1981, playing mostly small halls and releasing one legit live LP and a few lo-fi bootlegs. While the resulting record, The First and the Last, benefits from a significant amount of in-studio sweetening (backing vocals are added, guitar solos overdubbed), it's still an exciting, guitar-fueled rave-up. Fans of the early-'70s Motor City sound or early Aussie punk wouldn't want to be without it.

In September 1981, Salmon and Boris Sujdovic (ex Rockets) reformed the band, with Brett Rixon on drums and Tony Thewlis (ex Helicopters) on guitar, and prepared to move to Sydney. For this version of the band, the musical direction of the band turned more towards psychedelic-tinged rock'n'roll that often resembled what would later be known as grunge, as well as incorporating the influence of bands such as the Cramps, Suicide, the Stooges and Captain Beefheart. By the end of 1983, the Scientists were one of the most popular Australian independent bands. Deciding to move on to new horizons, they left Australia to move to London in March 1984. In October 1984, the band supported the Gun Club on their European tour. By this time, the band's music had left the Cramps-like sound behind, becoming much darker and harsher and coming more uniquely into their own. This lineup returned to Australia in April 1987 for the Human Jukebox tour. The band toured Australia in November 1987, with a lineup of Salmon, Thewlis, Combe on drums and Brett Rixon rejoining on bass. Their last show was at the Shenton Park Hotel, Perth, Saturday 27 November 1987.
The first version of the Scientists, as the Salmon/Baker/Sharples/Juniper lineup, reformed for a one-off show in Perth on 10 February 1995. There have been other reformation shows of both versions of the band. In May 2006 the band were invited by Mudhoney to play at the All Tomorrow's Parties (ATP) festival in the UK. They also supported Mudhoney at a performance at Shepherd's Bush Empire in London on May 11, 2006.

Scientists - 1st period

Kim Salmon had formed a protopunk band, the Cheap Nasties, in August 1976. He left them in December 1977. The remainder of the band, with Robbie Porritt joining as lead vocalist, continued as The Manikins. Salmon then replaced Mark Demetrius in the Exterminators, who then became known as the Invaders. The lineup included Roddy Radalj (guitar, vocals), Boris Sujdovic (bass) and John Rowlings (drums). The Invaders became the Scientists in May 1978, when James Baker from the Victims replaced John Rowlings. Sujdovic left the band in August 1978. The songwriting partnership that ensued, with Baker writing lyrics which Salmon would put to music, naturally favoured a melodic pop infused style of punk. The band started playing again in January 1979 with Dennis Byrne on bass. This lineup recorded the band's first single, "Frantic Romantic"/"Shake (Together Tonight)", released in June 1979 on the DNA label. Radalj and Byrne left in April 1979, to be replaced by Ben Juniper (guitar) and Ian Sharples (bass). This lineup recorded the band's second release, The Scientists EP (released February 1980) and did two tours of Melbourne and Sydney, in December 1979 and February/March 1980. In Melbourne, the band appeared on pop TV show Countdown, performing "Last Night" from the EP. Juniper left the band in May 1980 and Salmon, Baker and Sharples continued as a three-piece. The band broke up in January 1981 after recording their album, The Scientists (commonly referred to as The Pink Album), released in August 1981.
