'68 Comeback

Not to be confused with the Elvis TV special or Brian Setzer power trio of the same name, '68 Comeback rose from the ashes of Ohio's psychobilly kings, the Gibson Bros, in 1992. Spearheaded by now Memphis-based singer/songwriter/musicologist Jeffrey Evans -- who's said to have a shrine to rockabilly great Charlie Feathers in his living room -- this stripped-down blues-rock monster roared out of the garage (i.e. Evans' home studio) with a series of well-received singles on In the Red, Sub Pop, Get Hip, and a variety of other independent labels. Aside from Monsieur Evans (as he was now billing himself) on vocals, guitar, and blues harp, the initial lineup included Peggy O'Neill (the Gories) on drums, Darin Lin Wood (the Red Devils) on guitar, Dan Brown (Gloryhole) on bass, and Jack Taylor (Monster Truck Five) on guitar. (Yes, that's right -- three guitars.) Evans has claimed that their primary goal was to play live and to as accurately as possible recreate that live sound on record. On the strength of their first two singles, Chantilly Rock (And a Pony's Tail) (Sugar Ditch) and 3 X Loser (Sympathy for the Record Industry), they undertook a 60-day, 42-city U.S. tour. O'Neill was unable to make it, so Greg Cartwright (Oblivians) took her place on the traps. Upon completion of the cross-country jaunt, they went straight into the studio and laid down the tracks for their first EP, Paper Boy Blues (1993). Their first full-length, Mr. Downchild, followed in 1994. That same year, Sympathy compiled the 45s and the EP (plus a number of alternate takes and unreleased tracks) into Golden Rogues Collection and continued to release all their full-length recordings. Over the next few years, '68 Comeback issued several more 7"s -- including the double-single Someday My Prince Will Come (1996) -- and contributed to the soundtrack compilations, The Sore Losers (1997) and Shine On, Sweet Starlet (1998). Their most ambitious release to date, A Bridge Too Fuckin' Far, hit the streets in 1998. The 21-track double-LP was dedicated to guitarist Jack Taylor (born 1965), who had died of a drug overdose the previous year (that's his picture on the cover). It was followed by 1999's Love Always Wins, which consisted primarily of covers and is widely considered their most accessible release.

Henry's Funeral Shoe

Henry’s Funeral Shoe is a rock/blues band formed by two brothers in 2008 from South Wales, UK. The band was inspired and influenced by many of the albums that singer/guitarist Aled Clifford had looted from his father’s vinyl collection when he was growing up. The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Peter Green, Robert Johnson and the Beatles were favourites, and Aled quickly became a gifted guitar player, aided and taught by Ned Edwards, a long time collaborator of Van Morrison. Aled soon played with various bands, eventually doing some recording sessions for producer Ian Grimble, and even recording at the legendary Abbey Road studios. His younger brother Brennig Clifford started playing drums at nine. At fifteen, he joined a local band, learning his trade by performing covers of the Clash and Thin Lizzy before moving on to writing original material. Their debut album Everything’s for Sale was released on Alive Records.

The Unknown Passage/Dead Tymes

The Unknown Passage were a greek garage/psych/surf band from Amindeo, Florina. They started in the late-90's and, while they had only one official release, they performed numerous times all over northern Greece. In 2008, two Unknown Passage members (Kostas Hatzis and Manos Hatzitrifonos) created the side-project Dead Tymes, and under this name they self-produced and self-recorded one album.

Haystack

Haystack was a project started in the mid-90's by Uffe Cederlund (Entombed) when he wanted to explore his Unsane/Melvins/The Jesus Lizard/etc influences. Complete with Jonas Lundberg (A-Bombs) on drums and Johan Blomqvist (Backyard Babies) on bass, Haystack released two albums, both being very good and characteristic samples of the aforementioned sound. After Slave Me's release in 1998, Haystack called it quits, as Uffe decided it was time for him to concentrate back to Entombed.

The Ribeye Brothers

The Ribeye Brothers were formed in the early 90's by Tim Cronin and Jon Kleiman (both of Monster Magnet and Gallery of Mites fame) and move within a garage/cowpunk-ish sound. Apart from the two founding members, they have undergone several member changes, with the last known line-up being complete with Joe Calandra (ex-Monster Magnet as well) and Chris McKenna. So far they have released 3 full-lengths, If I Had a Horse... (2000), Bar Ballads and Cautionary Tales (2005) and New Ways to Fail (2009).

Swallow

Seattle band Swallow was formed in 1987 with Rod Moody on guitar and vocals, Andy Scheen on bass, Chris Pugh on guitar and vocals, and Scott Schickler on drums. Sub Pop Records released Swallow's first single (and Sub Pop's third), Trapped/Guts in 1988. Another song, "Zoo", was included on the label's Sub Pop 200 compilation that same year. In 1989, Sub Pop and British label Tupelo co-released Swallow's full-length eponymous record, and the band proceeded to tour the Southwest. The pop elements and harmonies that dominated many of the songs Pugh wrote and sang offered a welcome contrast to the band's more aggressive punk/metal songs typically growled by Moody. This caused one reviewer to exclaim "wow, the singer actually cleared his throat on this song!" Other writers dubbed the bands sound "motorcycle pop" and claimed that Swallow put the "pop" in Sub Pop. Sub Pop co-released their next full-length album, Sourpuss, with German label Glitterhouse, but limited its distribution to Europe. After recording that album, Schickler was replaced by Craig Bradford, and the group set out for another tour of the Southwest states. Due to the lack of available product, growing tensions in the band, and various other factors, the tour was challenging, but there were good times as well, such as the ultimate "El Lay" experience - a show at the Coconut Teazer with L7, Hole, Rikk Agnew's Yard Sale, and others. After they returned, they recorded what was to be their third album, but Sub Pop refused to release it, and Swallow broke up in 1992. The original lineup of Swallow reconvened in 2006 for two shows, and they liked it enough to start practicing regularly, write new songs, and play the occasional show. The lost third album, titled Teach Your Bird to Sing was released in 2007 on Flotation Records.

Charles Caldwell

Charles Caldwell was a tall (six foot eight) and charismatic guitar player who unfortunately was dealt a cruel hand by the music fates. Born in 1943, Caldwell lived his whole life in the north Mississippi hill country around Coffeeville, working at a fan-making factory in Greneda, and playing the local juke joints on the weekends for often no more pay than free liquor. He got his first guitar at the age of 14, the hollow-body Gibson 135 that he used the rest of his life to turn out the raw and passionate electric blues that was favored in the region. By the time Fat Possum founder Matthew Johnson stumbled across him in May of 2002, Caldwell was already dying of pancreatic cancer. His sole album, the fiery Remember Me, was recorded while Caldwell was undergoing chemo for his illness, which finally took his life in September of 2003. Remember Me came out on Fat Possum the following year, an amazing testament to Caldwell's considerable talent, and it remains a masterpiece of modern Mississippi blues.

A-Bombs

A-Bombs were a rock n'roll band created by known suspects of the swedish scene; Fred Estby (Dismember, Death Breath), Patric Wahlqvist (The Sewergrooves), Jonas Lundberg (Haystack), Daniel Andersson and Thomas Holm. They were active during the late-90's, releasing one single, one EP and one full-length, and contributing in Flattery: A Tribute to Radio Birdman vol.1.
