Gaza Strippers

Rick Sims, the leader of the Gaza Strippers, was the founding member and leader of pioneering and influential Chicago punk heroes the Didjits. Releasing five albums on Touch and Go Records over the course of the late eighties and early nineties, the band toured consistently all over the world. As the Didjits called it quits, Rick joined the Supersuckers on their 1994 album "Sacrilicous" (Sub Pop) and Fred Schneider of the B-52s on his 1996 album "Just Fred" (Reprise). Also active in local theater in current hometown Chicago, Rick has written and performed music for many productions at the Lookinglass Theater company.
In 1996, after leaving the Supersuckers, Sims got the itch to start a new band of his own. With bassist Darren Hooper and former drummer Todd Marino, the Gaza Strippers were born.
The Gaza Strippers are Rick Sims (Didjits, Supersuckers, LHOB) Darren Hooper, Mark Allen and Mike Hodgkiss. Currently defunct, catch a clip of the Gaza Strippers live to see how a live show should be done. They’re guaranteed to satisfy…

The Invisible Surfers

The Invisible Surfers started out in 1994 in Athens, Greece by Alex Berekos who was also both the guitarist as well as the singer for the legendary rockabilly band, the Blue Jeans, who were active during 1984-1996. They started as a pleasurable recess, and, in the beginning, they were a Link Wray Tribute Band. After the dissolution of the Blue Jeans, all the creative juices were poured into the Invisible Surfers where they created their own songs (moving within instrumental surf rock) and had many followers which helped them make their presence in the lineup of many diverse and musically distinct artists (in comparison to their music) such as the Cramps, Marky Ramone, the Mysterians, the Fuzztones, Flaming Stars as well as Apollo 440 and the Supergrass.

Supershit 666

Supershit 666 or Super$hit666 were a rock supergroup consisting of Ginger from the Wildhearts on vocals, Nicke Andersson from the Hellacopters on drums, Dregen from the Backyard Babies on guitar, and Swedish producer Tomas Skogsberg on bass. The only Supershit 666 release was an eponymous 6-track EP on Inferno records released in 1999. They have never played any gigs, and a minimum of rehearsing and recording time was used for the record. Although both Ginger and Dregen have repeatedly said in interviews they would like to record and perhaps tour under the Supershit 666 name again, due to the hectic schedules of all artists involved no firm plans have been made.

The Distillers

The hardcore punk outfit the Distillers first came together in late 1998 when Aussie native Brody Armstrong met bassist Kim Chi at work and realized their love for playing. Soon they hooked up with Detroit guitarist Rose Casper and drummer Matt. Signed to Epitaph, the band issued its self-titled debut in April 2000. "Sing Sing Death House" appeared the same year, but was re-released in early 2002 thanks to the sudden popularity of "Seneca Falls". By now, Kim Chi had left the group to join Exene Cervenka in her band, the Original Sinners. Ryan Sinn stepped in to replace her; Matt departed to join Chi while Casper left during the height of "Seneca Falls." By summer 2002, the Distillers were composed of Armstrong, Sinn, and new drummer Andy "Outbreak" Granelli; joint American dates with No Doubt and Garbage were planned for later that fall. Guitarist/vocalist Tony Bradley joined the Distillers in time for the recording of their third album and major-label debut, "Coral Fang", which was released in 2003 by Sire. For the album, Armstrong reverted back to playing under the name Brody Dalle, following her very public divorce from Rancid's Tim Armstrong that same year. Granelli left the band in early 2005, moving on to play with Darker My Love, and by summer, Sinn had exited as well, later joining up with Angels and Airwaves. Despite rumors, the Distillers, now just comprised of Dalle and Bradley, denied that they were breaking up, instead simply going on hiatus. In early 2006, Dalle had her first child, daughter Camille, with new husband Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age. By the year's end, the two remaining members formally announced the band's disbandment and went on to form Spinnerette together.

The Reverend Horton Heat part I

The Reverend Horton Heat is perhaps the most popular psychobilly artist of all time, really rivaled only by genre founders the Cramps. The Reverend (as both the three-man band and its guitar-playing frontman were known) built a strong cult following during the '90s through constant touring, manic showmanship, and a twisted sense of humor. The latter was nothing new in the world of psychobilly, and Heat's music certainly kept the trashy aesthetic of his spiritual forebears. The Reverend's true innovation was updating the psychobilly sound for the alternative rock era. In his hands, it was something more than retro-obsessed kitsch -- it had roaring distorted guitars, it rocked as hard as any punk band, and it didn't look exclusively to pop culture of the past for its style or subject matter. Most of the Reverend's lyrics were gonzo celebrations of sex, drugs, booze, and cars, and true to his name, his concerts often featured mock sermons in the style of a rural revivalist preacher. His initial recordings were released by that bastion of indie credibility, Sub Pop, at the height of the grunge craze; after a spell on major label Interscope, he returned to the independents, still a highly profitable draw on the concert circuit.

The Doits

The story of the Doits began in the late 70s in Skellefteå, the "capital of pop" in northern Sweden, where the two brothers Altay and David Sagesen were born and raised. They didn't like the taste of the mainstream pop that they grew up with so, by the time they formed their own band, they had developed an appetite for the heavier flavours of rock music and started looking for inspiration on the other side of the Atlantic. Since the release of their first album, the band members have spent a lot of time listening to a variety of power-pop, punk and new wave artists such as the Posies, Big Star, Reigning Sound, Buzzcocks, Stiv Bators, the Plimsouls, the Vibrators, the Flaming Groovies and the Barracudas to name but a few. Traces of soul, old blues and country & western have also been added to the mix. Together with multi-platinum producer Christoffer Lundquist (Ed Harcourt, Per Gessle, Magic Numbers), the band spent a few weeks in his studio Aerosoul Grey Machine and recorded their second album "Lost, Lonely & Vicious".

Celestial Season

The career of Holland's Celestial Season was characterized by two very distinct stylistic phases, as the group started out life as a somber, epic-minded doom metal band, then shifted gears a few years later to conclude its existence as a groovier, rock-based stoner group. This might seem like a minor difference upon first glance, but one listen to the group's first and final albums reveals just how much wiggle room actually exists between the further reaches of these two sister genres. Inspired by the work of doom metal giants such as Candlemass and Saint Vitus, Celestial Season formed in 1991 and initially featured vocalist Stefan Ruiters, guitarists Robert Ruiters and Jeroen Haverkamp, bassist Lucas van Slegtenhorst, and drummer Jason Kohnen. The "Promises" demo and "Flowerskin" EP from 1992 set the stage for their independent debut of the following year, "Forever Scarlet Passion", which boasted competent if rather unadventurous pure doom metal. The similarly slothful and depressing "Solar Lovers" album from 1995 would redress this issue somewhat, enriching the band's sound with the addition of full-fledged violin arrangements, courtesy of Jiska ter Bals and Maaike Aarts. Guitarist Pim van Zanen and guitarist/bassist Olly Smit had replaced Haverkamp and van Slegtenhorst for this release (which was supported by a European tour with countrymen the Gathering), but before the year was out, Celestial Season would undergo a drastic metamorphosis with the arrival of new singer Cyril Crutz and the transitional "Sonic Orb" EP. Inspired by the new gospel being preached by California desert stoner rock combos such as Masters of Reality, Fu Manchu, and especially Kyuss, the group was soon stripped down to the bare-bones quartet of Crutz, van Zanen, Smit, and Kohnen for the recording of 1997's brusque creative facelift, "Orange". Signifying a virtual product relaunch of Celestial Season Mark II, the album delivered a surprisingly convincing "California desert party" feel, considering it was coming from a Dutch band. But with the subsequent departure of last remaining original member Kohnen (replaced by former Kong drummer Rob Snijders), there was no denying that Celestial Season had effectively become an entirely new group. This lineup, plus new bassist Jacques de Haard, carried on for three further releases of pounding stoner rock, namely 1999's "Chrome" (which led to appearances at the Dynamo and Roadburn festivals), 2000's "Lunchbox Dialogues", and 2001's "Songs from the Second Floor" EP, before calling it quits, claiming that the band's musical quest had been "fulfilled."

The Stems

Leaders Dom Mariani and Richard Lane formed Australian garage/punk rockers the Stems in 1983. Playing such local venues as The Wizbah, The Old Melbourne, and The Shenton Park on a regular basis, the group built a substantial following, resulting in the release of their debut single in mid-1985, "Make You Mine" b/w "She's A Monster." Further releases soon followed, including singles, EPs (such as the "Love Will Grow" EP, produced by Radio Birdman's Rob Younger), and full-lengths (1987's best-selling "At First Sight Violets Are Blue"). Strangely, at the height of their success, the group suddenly disbanded. But over the years, Mariani and Lane have been able to put their differences aside to reunite the Stems for the odd reunion show, including a pair of shows in 1997. In 2007, the Stems also released their long overdue second album, "Heads Up", the follow up to 1987’s "At First Sight Violets Are Blue". The new album contained ten new original garage rock gems.

The Yes-Men

The Yes-Men were one of the most powerful Australian high energy rock'n'roll bands from the late 90s. Unfortunately they stayed as "the next big thing", due to a drugs overdose in 2001 which took frontman Sean Greenway away. Greenway (GOD, Freeloaders), was the leader and songwriter of this super band, in which members such as Tim Hemmensley (GOD, Bored!, Powder Monkeys) and Stewart "Leadfinger" Cunningham (Proton Energy Pills, Brother Brick, Asteroid B612, Challenger 7) also played. In their second release "El Peligro ha Comenzado" the Yes-Men expose those recordings that never saw the light of day, including amazing covers of songs by the Sex Pistols and Radio Birdman.

The Detroit Cobras

One of the earliest groups to emerge from the Detroit garage rock scene, the Detroit Cobras developed a reputation as the Midwest's finest (and most distinctive) cover band -- while the bandmembers devoted themselves to performing other people's material rather than recycling established hits, the Detroit Cobras dug deep into the well of vintage R&B and primitive rock & roll sides, building an individual identity out of lost classics from the past which they modified to fit their swaggering aural personality. The Detroit Cobras were formed in 1995 by Steve Shaw, who developed a taste for classic R&B from spending time with Alex Chilton, whom he met through his friends in Detroit primitives the Gories. The first edition of the Detroit Cobras featured former exotic dancer Rachel Nagy on vocals, Shaw and Maribel Restrepo (ex-Vertical Pillows) on guitars, Jeff Meier (from Rocket 455) on bass, and Vic Hill on drums, and they released their first 7" in 1996.
In what would prove to be the first in a long line of personal changes, Hill was replaced by Chris Fachini by the time the Cobras released their third single (which also hit the stores in 1996), and their debut LP, "Mink Rat or Rabbit", featured a third timekeeper, Damian Lang (who'd worked with
Snake Out and Elvis Hitler). During the three years that passed before the Detroit Cobras appeared on the Jack White-produced compilation "Sympathetic Sounds of Detroit", founder Shaw left the band, with Dante Aliano stepping in on guitar and Rob Smith taking over on bass. Rachel Nagy's tough but soulful vocals and Maribel Restrepo's lean, muscular guitar lines would be the group's only constants from this point on, though they would be enough to earn the group a potent following on the American garage scene and a major buzz in the United Kingdom, where they scored a deal with the fabled indie label Rough Trade, which released 2001's "Life, Love and Leaving" in Great Britain (it appeared on Sympathy for the Record Industry in the United States). (That LP also featured new guy Eddie Hawrsh on bass.)
While veteran tunesmiths Ellie Greenwich and Jackie DeShannon expressed interest in writing material with the group, the fourth Cobras album, 2004's "Baby", once again featured them rocking out on a stack of R&B dusties, though Greg Cartwright, who helped produce the album, did co-write an original with Nagy and Restrepo, "Hot Dog (Watch Me Eat)." The album also documented another Cobras lineup, with Nagy and Restrepo joined by Steve Nawara on guitar, Joe Mazzola on bass, and Kenny Tudrick on drums. After a brief hiatus and a move to Bloodshot Records, the Phil Spector-influenced "Tried & True" was released in 2007 with yet another rotation of musicians -- reintroducing Greg Cartwright and adding seasoned bassist Carol Schumacher, a fellow member of the Reigning Sound, to the ever-changing roster.
