The Solid Soul Disciples

Solid Soul Disciples is a long distance brotherhood from the UK and Brazil comprising of Marco Butcher (guitar), Black Mekon (vocals & harmonica), his brother Black Mekon (fuzz guitar), Danny C (drums), and the Fabulous Go-Go Boy from Alabama (guitar).
After meeting and bonding thru mutual respect for each others music and visiting each others home countries several times, the Disciples decided to jigsaw an album together based on their shared love of garage, punk, blues and country music. In June 2009 they got together to play the songs live for the first time and took The Mobile Church Of The Solid Soul Disciples on the road for a legendary tour of Brasil which saw stages in flames, backlines destroyed, police raids, giant totems of the band erected and they only made it all the way thru a show without incident once!
This is not a band. This is a brotherhood.
Be baptised in dirty water!

Les Sexareenos

Originally founded out of the ashes of the Spaceshits, Les Sexareenos got their name from a Ron Haydock teen pulp novel. After releasing some EPs and singles, all of which received praise for their incredible energy and live feeling, the group released their debut album on Sympathy for the Record Industry, Live! In the Bed. Touring continued for the group, including stops in Europe, Japan, and Australia. In 2001, the band released Can You Do the Nose Mustache?, another EP. This was prior to an August release of 14 Frenzied Shakers, their sophomore effort on Sympathy. The band has performed at several musical showcases in Canada and the United States, and has toured with the Deadly Snakes, the Von Bondies, and the Detroit Cobras among others. A collection of their numerous seven-inch releases, 28 Party Dancers from Montreal’s Finest, was released by Sympathy in 2005.

Bantam Rooster

Bantam Rooster was an American garage punk band, formed in 1994 in Lansing, Michigan. Over the years, Bantam Rooster have been a Thomas Jackson Potter (guitar/vocals) project, featuring Eric Cook, Mike Alonso & Nick Lloyd (ex-the Dirtys & ex-the Buzzards) on drums. Known for their rhythm and blues and hillbilly-influenced punk rock sound, the duo fluctuated between the all-out rock of "Dumb it Down" to the more melodic & lyrical stylings of "Perceptive Pornstar". Jim Diamond, the music producer and one-time member of the Dirtbombs along with Potter, has been dubbed as the "3rd Rooster", appearing occasionally live and producing. The group were first signed to Crypt Records in 1996, releasing Deal Me In (1997) and The Cross and the Switchblade (1999) to critical acclaim. In 2000, they moved to the revered Sympathy For The Record Industry imprint for the release of Fuck All Y’All, and received further exposure through their similar approach to their then label-mates, the White Stripes. The group disbanded in 2003 as Potter formed the funk rock band Detroit City Council. Tom Potter started his new band, the Chrome Spiders, in 2007. Potter also did time in the Dirtbombs appearing on Ultraglide In Black and Dangerous Magical Noise.

Dü Hüskers: The Twin Cities Replay Zen Arcade (1993)

Imagine being handed the task of reconstructing, in whole or part, a Hüsker Dü album -- any of the seminal recordings by the band who essentially reshaped the destructive, insular contour of 1980s hardcore. Now imagine being asked to take on Zen Arcade, the grandaddy of them all -- the cyclonic double album that devoured its own influences and churned out, at an amphetamine pace, a howling raison d'être for disillusioned punks everywhere. An intimidating task, to say the least. Which is why it's so surprising that this song-for-song "replay" of the band's loosely concept-based album succeeds much more frequently than it fails. As it would've been impossible to re-create the intensity of the legendary, recorded-in-85-hours masterpiece, most of the 24 Twin Cities-based bands who appear as the Dü Hüskers wisely (and this is probably as much to the credit of executive producer Pat Whalen as the artists) avoid an attempt at mimicking the roiling, vociferous monster that is Zen Arcade, instead opting to soak up the songs in their respective MOs, thereby enabling the return of some gratifying renditions molded in their own images. Which is not to say that there aren't plenty of reverential loud/fast covers here, but the strength of the compilation lies in the diversity of the artists and their willingness to freely interpret the songs. And that, along with local writer Terri Sutton's loving and eloquent liner notes, is probably the most fitting living eulogy for the band, and it makes for one of the most well-deserved and honestly crafted tributes in a genre littered with garish throwaways.

Black Mekon

These two vicious bastards (Black Mekon and his brother Black Mekon) were named after the legendary Black Mekong, illegitimate children of prostitutes visited by missionary preachers, abandoned to fend for themselves on the banks of The Mekong River.
Raised in a whorehouse by drunk dockworkers in a town called Christ’s Gasoline, they were born with only one arm between them and grew up selling sand to sailors and wrestling vermin and wives for the amusement of the locals. The rest of their upbringing is steeped in myth and told mostly in sea shanties, according to legend they escaped on a raft made of old Cramps and Doo Rag 45s using John Lee Hooker and Pussy Galore vinyl to paddle themselves to more familiar shores.

Somewhere along the line they acquired 3 more arms, a gypsy curse, drumsticks and a guitar, and ran into a fellow bluesman on the lam, Stunt Pussy, who agreed to help them whenever they needed to sing for their supper.

The live show? Blistering in-the-red punk blues, their travelling club (The Tight Pussy) has graced shores all over Europe and the US, 3 successful tours of South America and has designs on planting itself firmly in your lap next.

"We do not sing tales for tales sake, we can only approach this at 300mph with no regard for personal safety or truth. Your party needs us, as every good party does, for insecurity, tightrope-ing and hot lava. Black Mekon is your daddy, baby."

None of what you read may be true, all of what you hear is.

Serve it up!

The Wednesdays

"If you go back into the dark foothills of the Appalachian Mountains and listen to the lonely wail of an old freight train, you will hear the roots of the Wednesdays. There are guns, there are bombs, there are riots in the street, and on the T.V. sets of America discord thrives like a rabid wolf. There has never been world peace. There has never been spiritual peace. Mothers cry for children. In Deep South Alabama the circle goes unbroken. Within this all, there is a fire. The Wednesdays are three brothers from Dixie pounding out rhythms like a thousand coal mining hammers. Alabama. The Old South. Home of the burning church. The land of corn, crows, bibles, and bullets. There are no heroes, there is only music. It is a Fire."

Deltahead

Deltahead hail from Stockholm, Sweden and are a duo; a toting guitar and a stand-up bass and each packing a 28” Ludwig kick. Their sound is a bizarre mutation of Hasil Adkins, laced with deadly doses of ‘76 punk and delta blues. On stage, their brutal hybrid of punk and blues explodes like a black asphalt molotov cocktail leaving the survivors witness to a raging inferno beyond anything ever experienced.

This Is Boston, Not L.A. (1982)

For many punk rock enthusiasts, Boston isn't the first city that comes to mind when thinking of American cities that boasted a strong punk scene in the late '70s and early '80s. While Los Angeles, New York, and San Francisco were famous for their punk scenes, Boston's punk scene didn't enjoy nearly as much publicity. But make no mistake: Boston was a punk hotbed back then, and Modern Method Records tried to spread the word with this obscure but excellent compilation. Released in 1982, This Is Boston, Not L.A. spotlights seven Boston punk bands of the late '70s and early '80s: Jerry's Kids, Gang Green, the F.U.'s, the Freeze, the Proletariat, Decadence, and the Groinoids. While the Proletariat -- a very political band with Marxist/socialist leanings -- is heavily influenced by British punk, most of the other bands have more in common with L.A. residents like Black Flag and the Circle Jerks. But whoever their influences are, all of these bands have very substantial, hard-hitting lyrics -- the subject matter ranges from alcoholism on the Freeze's "It's Only Alcohol" and war on Gang Green's "Kill a Commie" to the excesses of slam dancing on Decadence's "Slam". This Is Boston, Not L.A. isn't the last word on Boston's late '70s/early '80s punk scene, but it paints an impressive picture of the Beantown punks who were active during that era.

Hillstomp

When Hillstomp members Henry Kammerer and John Johnson met in 2001 in Portland, OR, at one of Kammerer's solo shows, Johnson had never been that interested in the blues. He was, however, interested in the self-taught slide guitar music that Kammerer was playing, and though he had studied jazz saxophone in school and was playing bass for local alternative rock bands, he agreed to play drums with Kammerer. Using a homemade kit, Johnson, with Kammerer on vocals and guitar, began to develop a unique style of country blues, releasing the debut album One Word in 2004. They followed up with The Woman That Ended the World in 2006.
