The Solid Soul Disciples

Solid Soul Disciples is a long distance brotherhood from the UK and Brazil comprising of Marco Butcher (guitar), Black Mekon (vocals & harmonica), his brother Black Mekon (fuzz guitar), Danny C (drums), and the Fabulous Go-Go Boy from Alabama (guitar).
After meeting and bonding thru mutual respect for each others music and visiting each others home countries several times, the Disciples decided to jigsaw an album together based on their shared love of garage, punk, blues and country music. In June 2009 they got together to play the songs live for the first time and took The Mobile Church Of The Solid Soul Disciples on the road for a legendary tour of Brasil which saw stages in flames, backlines destroyed, police raids, giant totems of the band erected and they only made it all the way thru a show without incident once!
This is not a band. This is a brotherhood.

Black Mekon

These two vicious bastards (Black Mekon and his brother Black Mekon) were named after the legendary Black Mekong, illegitimate children of prostitutes visited by missionary preachers, abandoned to fend for themselves on the banks of The Mekong River.
Raised in a whorehouse by drunk dockworkers in a town called Christ’s Gasoline, they were born with only one arm between them and grew up selling sand to sailors and wrestling vermin and wives for the amusement of the locals. The rest of their upbringing is steeped in myth and told mostly in sea shanties, according to legend they escaped on a raft made of old Cramps and Doo Rag 45s using John Lee Hooker and Pussy Galore vinyl to paddle themselves to more familiar shores.
Somewhere along the line they acquired 3 more arms, a gypsy curse, drumsticks and a guitar, and ran into a fellow bluesman on the lam, Stunt Pussy, who agreed to help them whenever they needed to sing for their supper.
The live show? Blistering in-the-red punk blues, their travelling club (The Tight Pussy) has graced shores all over Europe and the US, 3 successful tours of South America and has designs on planting itself firmly in your lap next.

Deltahead

Deltahead hail from Stockholm, Sweden and are a duo; a toting guitar and a stand-up bass and each packing a 28” Ludwig kick. Their sound is a bizarre mutation of Hasil Adkins, laced with deadly doses of ‘76 punk and delta blues. On stage, their brutal hybrid of punk and blues explodes like a black asphalt molotov cocktail leaving the survivors witness to a raging inferno beyond anything ever experienced.

When Hillstomp members Henry Kammerer and John Johnson met in 2001 in Portland, OR, at one of Kammerer's solo shows, Johnson had never been that interested in the blues. He was, however, interested in the self-taught slide guitar music that Kammerer was playing, and though he had studied jazz saxophone in school and was playing bass for local alternative rock bands, he agreed to play drums with Kammerer. Using a homemade kit, Johnson, with Kammerer on vocals and guitar, began to develop a unique style of country blues, releasing the debut album One Word in 2004. They followed up with The Woman That Ended the World in 2006.

Radio Moscow

Named for the pre-Cold War precursor to the propaganda outlet Voice of Russia, Radio Moscow are a blues-rock trio from Ames, IA, with a similarly anachronistic retro feel. Where bands like the Black Keys (whose guitarist Dan Auerbach produced Radio Moscow's debut album) and the White Stripes play with a stripped-down, modern take on the old power trio sound, Radio Moscow hark back to the glory days of the power trio, when Cream, the Jimi Hendrix Experience, and Blue Cheer roamed the earth and the power of the Marshall stack was unquestioned. Radio Moscow formed in Ames in 2004, a collaboration between two garage punk enthusiasts whose tastes had shifted into the heavy side of late-'60s psychedelia. Guitarist, singer, songwriter, and drummer Parker Griggs and bassist Luke McDuff approached Auerbach with a demo following a Black Keys gig, and the more established musician was impressed enough to both produce their debut album and to get the duo signed to his label, Alive Records. Although Griggs and McDuff recorded their self-titled first album as a duo, the pair hired drummer Mayuko to complete the trio for live purposes shortly before the album's release.

Cash Money/Cash Audio

Previously known as Cash Money, Chicago's punky blues duo Cash Audio consists of former Rosehip Scott Giampino and John Humphrey, formerly of God and Texas and the Late Great Danes. Humphrey originally enlisted Giampino to play drums with the Late Great Danes in 1994, but when the band went on hiatus, they began performing as Cash Money. They debuted with the Oil Can/Helicopter Ride single on the tiny Tug-O-War label, which led to a deal with Touch and Go. Their first full-length Black Hearts and Broken Wills arrived in 1997, followed by the Letter to Stax single and second album Halos of Smoke and Fire the next year, both of which won the group critical acclaim. However, thanks to a lawsuit from the rap label of the same name, Cash Money had to change their name to Cash Audio in 1999. Green Bullet, their first album under that name, arrived the following year; after switching to the Orange imprint, they delivered the aptly named The Orange Sessions in early 2001.

Mr. Airplane Man

Mr. Airplane Man is a Boston duo, Margaret Garrett (guitar, vocals) and Tara McManus (drums, keyboards), who have been playing since 1996. They named themselves after a Howlin’ Wolf song. Their obsession with rock and roll music since early high school inspired the band. They began playing on the street and by 1999 they were voted Best New Local Act by readers of the Boston Phoenix. They recorded their first full-length record in March 2001. It was raw and real. They played with the White Stripes and the Strokes, as well as local Boston garage rockers, Lyres. When they recorded their second record, Moanin’, they got to work with Jim Diamond and Greg “Oblivian” Cartwright. John Peel soon discovered them too and had them do a session. This led to their first European tour, which was highly successful. Mr. Airplane Man played many large tours of America in 2003. In the meantime, they were back in Memphis where they recorded their third record, C'mon DJ, which came out in January 2004.

Henry's Funeral Shoe

Henry’s Funeral Shoe is a rock/blues band formed by two brothers in 2008 from South Wales, UK. The band was inspired and influenced by many of the albums that singer/guitarist Aled Clifford had looted from his father’s vinyl collection when he was growing up. The Who, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Peter Green, Robert Johnson and the Beatles were favourites, and Aled quickly became a gifted guitar player, aided and taught by Ned Edwards, a long time collaborator of Van Morrison. Aled soon played with various bands, eventually doing some recording sessions for producer Ian Grimble, and even recording at the legendary Abbey Road studios. His younger brother Brennig Clifford started playing drums at nine. At fifteen, he joined a local band, learning his trade by performing covers of the Clash and Thin Lizzy before moving on to writing original material. Their debut album Everything’s for Sale was released on Alive Records.

Charles Caldwell

Charles Caldwell was a tall (six foot eight) and charismatic guitar player who unfortunately was dealt a cruel hand by the music fates. Born in 1943, Caldwell lived his whole life in the north Mississippi hill country around Coffeeville, working at a fan-making factory in Greneda, and playing the local juke joints on the weekends for often no more pay than free liquor. He got his first guitar at the age of 14, the hollow-body Gibson 135 that he used the rest of his life to turn out the raw and passionate electric blues that was favored in the region. By the time Fat Possum founder Matthew Johnson stumbled across him in May of 2002, Caldwell was already dying of pancreatic cancer. His sole album, the fiery Remember Me, was recorded while Caldwell was undergoing chemo for his illness, which finally took his life in September of 2003. Remember Me came out on Fat Possum the following year, an amazing testament to Caldwell's considerable talent, and it remains a masterpiece of modern Mississippi blues.

Soledad Brothers

The dark blues duo Soledad Brothers began in early 1998 after guitarist/vocalist Johnny Wirick (a.k.a. Johnny Walker) asked drummer Ben Smith (a.k.a. Ben Swank) if he wanted to play a show. Since then, they had recorded for Detroit's Italy Records and Bellingham, Washington's Estrus label. Wirick and Smith's partnership can be traced back to their days in the Toledo, Ohio blues group Henry and June, which existed from 1994 until 1996. After that group broke up, Wirick continued playing with drummer Doug Walker in the two-piece blues outfit Johnny Walker. Before one of the band's shows in early 1998, Walker decided to leave the group. Looking for someone to fill in for the gig, Wirick turned to Smith, who agreed to play. Developing from what was supposed to be a one-off show, Wirick and Smith decided to continue as the Soledad Brothers. After a few performances around the Toledo, Ohio and Detroit, Michigan areas, Dave Buick, owner of the Detroit-based Italy Records, approached the Soledad Brothers about cutting a single. This turned out to be their first 7", released in late 1998. Around the same time as the release of the single, the national independent label Estrus began distributing some of Italy's catalog. Upon hearing the Soledad Brothers, Estrus signed the group in early 1999. With the label, the band recorded their second single, which was released late that year. Jack White, a member of the Detroit band the White Stripes, produced the 7". White had known the Soledad Brothers since their first gig and was a labelmate of the group during their time with Italy. White also assisted the band for two years recording their self-titled debut. It was during those two years that the group opened a show at Cleveland, Ohio's Pat's, located in the famous Flats, for legendary MC5 manager John Sinclair. He enjoyed the Soledad Brothers so much that he invited them to be the backing group for his part of the performance. This led to a friendship with Sinclair that resulted in him writing the liner notes for the band's 2000 debut album. Their sophomore effort, 2002's Steal Your Soul and Dare Your Spirit to Move, added several new instruments, including a second guitar, and a new group member in multi-instrumentalist Oliver Henry. Like many other Detroit bands, the Soledad Brothers became unexpected beneficiaries of the surprise international success of the White Stripes, which brought new attention to the city's blues-rooted rock scene, and in 2003 they released their first major label album, Voice of Treason.

Porch Ghouls

Busting up the country blues so they can have fun putting the pieces back together, the Porch Ghouls are a Memphis, TN, four-piece that cross-breeds pure, unpolished Southern blues with the gritty energy of punk rock and come up with a fusion they call "Ruckus Music." The Porch Ghouls were formed in the summer of 1997 as a Gainesville, FL, trio called the Ghastly Ones. The original lineup was comprised of two members of the group Grit Kisser -- Eldorado Del Ray and Bon Musclecar -- and their pal Son Rocket. The group adopted the name the Porch Ghouls when they discovered a band in California was already using the name the Ghastly Ones, and the unfriendly environment for left-of-center bands in Florida led them to hit the road for New Orleans; after a short stay in the Crescent City, the group settled in Memphis. The group faced a number of personnel changes in Memphis before settling on a stable lineup of Eldorado Del Ray on Dobro guitar and lead vocals, Slim Electro on electric guitar, Randy Valentine on harmonica, and Duke Baltimore on percussion (mostly an amplified suitcase). This lineup cut the group's debut EP in 2001, though by the end of the year, Duke Baltimore had been replaced by a female drummer, Lady Baltimore. In 2002, the Porch Ghouls gained an unexpected ally in Aerosmith guitarist Joe Perry, who heard the band, liked their stripped-back and bluesy sound, and signed them to his newly-formed record label, Roman Records. The band's first album for the Sony-distributed imprint was released in 2003.

Sunday Nights: The Songs of Junior Kimbrough (2005)

If rock & roll is the bastard child of the blues, it's only one of many. Junior Kimbrough was rumored to have sired 36 children before his passing in 1998, but on this tribute CD, Fat Possum Records brings together 15 of bluesman Kimbrough's spiritual bastards, including some absolute legends of underground rock. Opening and closing with two different versions of "You Better Run", the reunited Iggy & the Stooges go straight for the throat, as would be expected. More surprising are the contributions from Spiritualized, who complete their transition from space-age gospel shoegazers to the blues-rock already hinted at in recent recordings, while the Blues Explosion pass on their well-known punkified yelp in exchange for a more straight rendition of "Meet Me in the City." Other rockers well-known for their blues roots are the Black Keys and Screaming Trees/Queens of the Stone Age vocalist Mark Lanegan, whose lesser known cover of Leadbelly's "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" inspired the infamous Nirvana unplugged version. The loosest recording comes from U.K. youngsters the Fiery Furnaces. Their version of "I'm Leaving" showcases Eleanor Friedberger's impressive juke-joint voice while brother Matthew Friedberger's quick-fingered guitar playing is the most skillful on display. It is inspiring that yet another generation of unkempt rockers are aware of the quickly disappearing blues' originals, and occasionally even up-stage the elder rockers, all of whom, of course, Kimbrough would have considered young'uns.

Hormonas

Let it be known then that the Hormonas take some basic elements of what is known as garage, punk rock and psycho trash-a-billy, and mercilessly whip it up into their own sonic blastings which send them spinning into a maelstrom of tension and barely controlled menace. With hoodoo-voodoo vibes a-plenty, real cool time primitive drumming, played by Michela, and some full-on spidery / echo guitar scratchin’ n slashin’ going on, the band are to be found somewhere on the brink of – dare I mention it – Crampsian mayhem and rockin’ debauchery. Arriving on the scene in Venice, Italy in the early 2000's, the Hormonas have taken their twisted rock’n’roll show on the road all over Italy, and over to London too, sharing bills along the way with everyone from Tav Falco’s Panther Burns, fellow Italians the Rippers, and US musician / producer Tim Kerr. The Hormonas play the kind of stylised dirty and raw, sometimes furious garage punk-blues that certain acts, some currently enjoying global fame status, could only hope to dream about. With the Hormonas, it’s like they’ve got the sound of the suburban teen garage hang-outs, and the ‘gator-infested swamps in their alcohol-soaked veins and play like their very lives depend on it.
