The Devil Dogs part I

While recording an album in 1989, New York City punk band the Rat Bastards imploded due to typical musical differences, and two members, Andy Gortler (guitar, vocals) and Steve Baise (bass, vocals), carried on with the project as the Devil Dogs. Influenced particularly by '60s trash rock (Sonics, Wailers), Phil Spector's "Wall of Sound", and the big New York punk sound of the '70s (Ramones, New York Dolls, Dictators), the Devil Dogs went on to release a slew of LPs, EPs, live albums, and 45s. Gortler originally formed a band called Gilligan's Revenge in the early '80s, which became Token Entry and then Black Train Jack after his departure. Baise played in a New Jersey-based surf/punk combo, PT109, before joining the Rat Bastards. Drummer "Mighty" Joe Vincent, who also played in PT109, joined the group in 1991.

Black Diamond Heavies

Stripping the deep blues to its frame and running the music through a big stack of amps while shaking it into a cold sweat, the Black Diamond Heavies are a band from East Nashville, TN, who prove that in terms of sonic impact and soulful energy, size doesn't matter much at all. The Black Diamond Heavies were formed by keyboard man and vocalist John Wesley Myers, Mark "Porkchop" Holder on guitar and harmonica, and drummer Van Campbell. Myers was previously a member of the feral blues-punk combo the Immortal Lee County Killers, while Campbell had kept time with the Invisibles and the Rum Circus. The Black Diamond Heavies started gigging in 2004 and self-released an EP called You Damn Right in 2005. The record and especially the BDHs' wildly frantic live shows won them a rabid fan following, especially in the South, but in early 2006 Holder amicably left the band, unhappy with the rigors of life on the road. Myers and Campbell opted not only to continue without Holder, but to not replace him; stripped down to a two-piece, the band's music became even more raw and intense than before, and in the summer of 2006 the band scored a record deal with noted garage punk label Alive Records. The Black Diamond Heavies' first full-length album, Every Damn Time, was released in early 2007.

Year Long Disaster

Taking their cues from the blues-rock and Southern rock movements of the 1970s, Los Angeles-based Year Long Disaster began with Daniel Davies, the group's lead singer and guitarist. While struggling with a drug habit in April 2003, he met Rich Mullins, bassist and founding member of Karma to Burn. Mullins was himself battling addiction -- after leaving Karma to Burn to play with the Dallas, TX, band Speedealer (and hoping the move would help him outrun his problems), he was kicked out of the new group and went to Holland. Friends there convinced him to take some recordings to industry friends in Los Angeles; Mullins was only planning to stay in the city for a month when he met Davies. The two became fast friends, and within a month of knowing each other, they both went into rehab. After a month of initial treatment and six months in a sober-living halfway house, the duo completed the program in December 2003. In November 2004, Davies and Mullins saw drummer Brad Hargreaves playing a gig with Hours and Minutes and invited him to an informal jam session, not knowing that the percussionist was a member of Third Eye Blind. Hargreaves agreed to join them -- the trio bonded quickly and formed Year Long Disaster shortly afterward. After signing with Volcom Entertainment, the group's self-titled debut album was released in October 2007.

The Vikings

In 1993 Morten Henriksen (ex-Cosmic Dropouts, now fronting the splendid powerpop quartet The Yum Yums) organized several gigs in Norway for the Devil Dogs whose singer/bass player Steve Baise got to know his later Norwegian wife at one of the shows. Since Steve was now quite frequently coming back to Norway, Morten had the idea of creating a Devil Dogs cover band with buddies Thomas Seltzer and Knut Schreiner (Turbonegro's Happy Tom and Euroboy respectively) featuring Steve Baise himself on the vocals. Each time Steve returned to Norway a couple of gigs were performed followed by various recording sessions that included covers by Bobby Fuller, Joan Jett, Bay City Rollers, The Boys, Cheap Trick, Nervous Eaters, Fun Things etc. plus some leftover originals by the members' main bands thrown in. The Vikings released one full length album Go Berzerk! in 1995 worldwide on labels in europe, USA and Japan including the complete tracks from their previously released two singles on Screaming Apple and Sympathy for the Record Industry. A further great release has been their final four-track EP High Time for Hit Me! Records. Songs included here are covers of The Dictators' "Next big thing" & The Zero Boys' "High Time", as well as the original version of the fabulous punk anthem "Good Head" - a composition by Thomas and Knut - that was later re-recorded by Turbonegro for Apocalypse Dudes.

B.G.K.

B.G.K., or Balthasar Gerards Kommando were a 1980s Dutch punk band. The band was named after a Dutch historical figure named Balthasar Gerards, who assassinated the king of the Netherlands in 1584. Balthasar Gerards Kommando were formed in the early 1980s by members of Amsterdam punk band the Nitwitz.
Rejecting the then-popular trend to emulate British Oi bands, B.G.K. took their musical cues from American hardcore bands such as MDC, and soon developed an ultrafast style of their own. The band was also committed to following through with its leftist political stance, both in terms of the punk scene (the band set up DIY shows with low door prices, and put out affordable records on their own label) and in a wider political spectrum (they often played benefits for various causes, and helped run the Emma squat in Holland).
B.G.K. released all their records on a label they started in their Nitwitz days, Vögelspin, and collaborated with U.S. labels R Radical and Alternative Tentacles. They helped touring bands playing in the Netherlands, and themselves toured Europe and the U.S. several times, finally calling it quits in 1987.
After B.G.K.’s demise, bassist Tony formed rock’n’roll band Loveslug. In 1996, the Nitwitz reunited (partially due to interest from Epitaph Records).
